The scheme is currently only supplying bikes to those who will be commuting.
Pedal Power is an initiative that aims to support people with access to employment, education and training by providing low cost bike rental. The scheme also allows people to access a bike in order to improve their health or wellbeing.
East Sussex County Council successfully secured Department for Transport Access Funding, to deliver a programme of cycling and walking initiatives, and this is referred to as ‘East Sussex Active Access for Growth Programme
Anyone over the age of 16 years can apply to get a bike, but you must live within the East Sussex County Council area and be using the bike to get to work.
Until further notice you must be a Key Worker. During normal times the scheme is focussed on supporting access to work, education or training. We also take referrals from programmes involved in workplace or workforce development schemes, and people participating in public health led community development projects. Individuals may also apply directly without referral.
You can choose to rent a bike for a period of bewteen 1 and 6 months.
All our bikes are fitted with mudguards, luggage rack and good quality lock. You also have the option of buying a helmet, USB lights, pannier bags and hi -visibility vest.
Once you have signed up it will normally take between 7 to 10 days to complete the paperwork and arrange a bike for you.
You pay for your bike rental monthly in advance by credit card or direct debit.
The maximum loan period is 6 months, so can you rent a bike up to this time limit.
No, a deposit is not required so that we keep the initial costs as low as possible for you. However you will be liable for the cost of repair or replacement of any parts damaged through misuse.
Provided that you have locked the bike as we demonstrate to you, then the bikes are covered by our insurance. Otherwise, you are liable for the replacement cost of the bike and equipment. In any event you will need to contact the police and obtain a crime reference number from them.
